1000 Sales on Etsy

I know it has been a while... but hey I got some news to share I reached over 1000 sales in my Etsy shop 1002 to be exact! How cool is that? I was pretty surprised when I saw it and you know I had to do my happy dance. Just in case anyone stops by my blog on occasion apparently like I do just wanted to share the happy news!

I actually started selling on Etsy in 2011 but no matter the date I am still happy!

A Crochet Sweater

I made a sweater or shrug or cardigan whatever you want to call it,  I made something for me to wear that was not a hat or scarf and I am absolutely in love with it! This post is more like a What's on the hook, What's off the hook and pattern review all wrapped up into one.

This project has been on my never ending things to crochet list for over a year! Why it has taken me so long to actually complete it I am not for sure but now that I have I believe I have crochet sweater fever every time I get on the world wide web... I see another pattern for a beautiful sweater. Anyway back to this one, it is a free pattern from LionBrand that you can find HERE. However my inspiration to actually make and finish my sweater is because of All About Ami's tutorial found HERE.


I decided to use the yarn recommend in the original pattern which is LionBrand Homespun. I was thinking I wanted to use a cream off white color but when I saw this beautiful purple mixture I knew immediately it was the color for my sweater.

I purchased three skeins and used 2 1/2 skeins to complete my sweater. I did a starting chain of 85 for my sweater using a 10mm hook. The construction of the sweater is very simple you are just doing single crochet in the back loop only, which can also make this a project that you push to the side. I crocheted a total of 58 rows, I decided not to the collar instead just added a row of hdc all the way around with 6.5mm hook.

All I can say is keep the end result in mind and it will keep you going. I am in love with my sweater and actually looking forward to making another one. the great thing with this project is that the results will be different depending on the yarn and hook size that you use. I think my next one will either be in Bernat Chucky or the new Lion Brand Woolspun.



 

 

The front is nice as well, I crocheted 56 rows total.

I will probably be wearing this the entire Fall Season.

Why I Crochet...

Today is international crochet day! How cool is that a day just for "hookers" got to love that crochet humor but since it is our day I thought it a great day to share with you my top 10 reasons why I crochet although the list could go on and on and on so here we go...

Ten Reason Why I Crochet:

Reason 10: Because I can't sleep at night... so I crochet

Reason 9: Because I don't have cable, which means I spend a lot of time on Netflix, which means I can watch entire seasons of shows like Breaking Bad and make a hat for every episode.

Reason 8: Because last time I checked I had over 100 projects on my "I want to crochet this" list and I add at least one project to that list everyday.

Reason 7: Because I have a yarn stash that could fill up one of the rooms in my house but I spread it throughout the house so it doesn't look like I have too much.

Reason 6: Because of all the other wonderful "hookers" I have connected with, everywhere I go I can find someone who crochets even when in another country we don't have to speak the same language as long as we can speak crochet!

Reason 5: Because I work for a major airline where people think I have a crystal ball and can control the weather as well as the weight and smell of the person sitting next to them on the plane :). I crochet to keep me from going crazy on my "day job".

Reason 4: Because sometimes I pray while I crochet, I turn everything off it is just me yarn a hook and I have a little talk with Jesus!

Reason 3: To teach, I love to share the art of crochet with others so I crochet to stay updated on my skills to share with others.

Reason 2: To make things and share the art of crochet with the world, I have been lucky to have a crochet business that continues to grow every year Don't Get it Twisted Crochet.

Beanie season is quickly approaching... that time of year when you are searching for your favorite hat to fight off the chill of fall and then the wintery blues...

Yarn Review Lion Brand Lion's Pride Woolspun

So over the Labor Day Weekend I was able to get my hands on some of Lion Brand's new Lion's Pride Woolspun yarn... not sure why they decided to go with the name Woolspun considering they have previously released two other yarns with the same name even though they have since been discontinued. Regardless I was still excited to finally add this yarn to my stash. You can see my video review of the yarn below.

Pattern Review Friday - Crochet Chain Scarf

Hello It's pattern Review Friday on a Monday... because I forgot to post on Friday.

Today's pattern comes from a book that I have had on my book shelf for over a year and I have to tell you to be prepared to see several pattern reviews from this book ( I probably should just do a book review) but seriously almost every pattern in this book is on my never ending I have to crochet this list.

The book is called Crochet Boutique by Rachel Oglesby - The project I am reviewing for this one is the Crochet Chain Scarf.

Cost: The book retails for $17.95 and can be found on Amazon and I am sure many other places just do a quick search on Google.

Difficulty: This is a beginner pattern like super beginner like the pattern is mostly done with the very first stich that you learn when you learn to crochet which is the chain stitch. So if you want to perfect your chaining skills this is the pattern for you.

Why You Will Hook It: Because it is so simple but the result is so chic and it works up really quick.

Why You Will Frog It:  If you are experienced in crochet you may find the pattern to be a bit boring  but keep the end result in mind and it will keep you going.

How Many Hooks: 5 out of 5 hooks. This is a well written beginner pattern it works up quick and can be easily modified. The yarn suggestion is one that is easily attainable or substituted.

For my version I used Knit Picks Shine Worsted the orange color is called Citrus and I can't remember the color of the green but I know it is also for them Knit Picks Shine collection. I didn't have enough of one color to do the entire scarf in one color which is why I used two... but I am really liking the two tone and probably will do more in two colors in the future.

Don't Get it Twisted Crochet ~ Pattern Review Friday

It's Friday time for another Pattern Review this week I hooked up a textured slouchy beanie. If you have been following me for any length of time you know I love a slouchy beanie; but I was looking for something new for this year a beanie with a little more texture and I think I have found the one.

This is the slouchy beanie from the Etsy shop byaccessorise you can find the pattern in her Etsy shop here.

Cost: $4.90

Difficulty: Advanced Beginner the pattern does not call for any difficult stitches but you should be familiar with crocheting in the back loop and seaming; and of course you should be able to make a pompom although if you Google "how to make a pompom" you will be a pompom expert in no time flat.

Why You Will Hook It: The instructions are pretty clear, the pattern writer assumes that you have some experience with crochet so it is not a "beginner" pattern where every step is explained in detailed but if you have worked with patterns before and know basic crochet you will be able to follow this pattern. It works up quick, and if you want to add just a little something different to your hats you can easily customize the pompom colors and play around with the colors in the beanie as well the texture makes it the perfect hat for guys/girls.

Why You Will Frog It: I honestly don't see a reason why you wrong this project if you start it. By the time you get ready to frog it you will be finished.

How Many Hooks: I give this pattern 4 out of 5 hooks. I love the instant gratification that one can get from crochet and this pattern definitely meets that requirement. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the pattern was not clear on what type of yarn to use; so I had to play around with my stash and do a couple of swatches before finding the right yarn.

This is my version, I used Red Heart Soft in Berry and also added a slip stitch around the edge. I am calling it the "Lucindy" hat as it reminds me of my Great Aunt Luncindy who taught me how to crochet.

The Slouchy Beanie not just for a Bad Hair Day

Most people when they think of hats it is not necessarily for style... but rather to cover up a bad hair day or to keep warm on a rainy or cold day; but occasionally there comes along a hat that is an absolute must have style accessory and I believe the slouchy beanie is just that hat!

My Favorite Yarn - Caron Simply Soft

The number one question I get asked is what is my favorite yarn or what yarn do I suggest using. I have three yarns that I use most often for my crochet business Don't Get it Twisted Crochet, but I must say that I am a yarnalcholic... so I am pretty much in love with any hand spun hand dyed yarn and have a pretty large stash of this very said yarn and if I had to say what is my absolute favorite it would be all the yarn in that stash.

However if we are talking about what is my go to, never fails, I can pretty much make anything I want to from it yarn it would definitely be Caron's Simply Soft. I did a yarn review on this yarn a few months ago which you can check out below pretty much sums up all the reasons I love it.

Caron's Simply Soft is a 100% acrylic yarn, worsted weight or (4) weight yarn. Last time I checked it came in 36 colors but I believe they have added more since then. It is easy care machine wash and dry you can pretty much find it at any of the large craft stores in the US, Michaels, Joann's, AC Moore and Wal-Mart. I have also ordered it online off of Amazon. My only con about this yarn is that it tends to split a little more often than I like but all the over things I love about it overshadow this one little thing.

So a couple of months ago I talked about crochet "Patience" crocheting my first doll. I didn't know then exactly where the journey was going to take me all I knew then is that I was in LOVE! It amazes me the things that can happen when you put yarn and hook in hand.

Since "Patience" I researched and experimented with several different doll making techniques from head down, to body up, to adding hair first to adding hair later, I have also tried different yarn types from using my go to yarn Caron Simply Soft as well as Red Heart Super Saver and Sugar and Cream Cotton. I have found that I prefer making the head separate and then crocheting the body from the legs up and I prefer a cotton yarn over acrylic as it seems to give the doll a more sturdy body, and I absolutely love dressing them up; the moment I put on her tutu, or dress, or skirt it is like immediately the doll comes to life with her own little personality and I am immediately in love.

Something else that happened that I didn't even expect is all the love for the "brown dolls" when I crocheted "Patience" I decided to make her with brown yarn simply because I wanted a doll who looked like me; it did even occur to me that so many other women would want the same that in 2014 there would be a gap in the market for dolls of color. After doing a little searching on Google I realized that I had my crochet blinders on... I am a true believer that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and COLOR; but as an African American woman it is important that our little girls know and see the beauty in every shade of brown. With that being said I am super proud to introduce an extension of Don't Get it Twisted Crochet ~ My Pretty Brown Doll handmade crocheted brown dolls!

I Went To London To Buy Yarn....

I went to London... I brought Yarn.... I came home. #thatisall

Well not really all but that pretty much sums up my trip. :)



In front of I Knit London (thank God for Google Maps I almost didn't find this place).





I was not able to get as much yarn as I wanted as the conversion from Pounds to Dollars is almost doubled. But I was able to get my hands on some hand spun hand dyed lace weight silk yarn. It will be my very first time working with a lace weight yarn but the folks in the shop were very convincing that I could crochet a beautiful shawl.... now the hunt is on for a pattern. I also purchased some mercerized cotton not pictured; I got it mainly to compare to the mercerized cotton here in the states. I will let you know how it works up in another post as well as what I decided to do with the beauty below.

This yarn colorway was dyed just for the "I Knit London" yarn shop.

 

It was much colder than I expected and raining... but I did try to make the best of my impromptu trip across the pond... and me and the bestie did hit up all the tourist spots while there.

Crochet Patience

I made a crochet doll. Her name is Patience. I have had several different crochet doll patterns on my never ending "things to crochet list" for quite some time now, but when i saw the doll in issue 10 of "Simply Crochet" crocheting a doll moved to the very top of my to do list. A quick read over the pattern it seemed pretty simple the majority of the pattern was single crochet which is the first stitch most crocheters learn after learning the chain; so making a doll should have been a quick and easy task for me. Six legs, two arms, and two heads half full of hair later we finally have Patience. Never in my crochet life have I had so much trouble with such a basic stitch. Needless to say I made quite a few modifications to the pattern and under close inspection there are quite a few things I need to do better, but I so love her. My favorite part is her hair.
Some deets on Miss Patience:
Pattern: Heavily modified version of doll from issue 10 of Simply Crochet
Yarn: Head and Body Caron Simply Soft color Chocolate
Hair: Loops and Threads Charisma color Black
Clothes: Made by my Aunt Sally
Stuffed with Poly-fil Height: Approximately 14" from top of head to bottom of leg.

I plan to make a few more dolls and try different techniques and dress this lady up in different outfits.

Dress Up Your Cup Coffee Cup Cozy

I will be honest I have never really understood the concept of a mug, cup, or bottle cozy. That is not until I crocheted my first one and after doing so I realized that like many things that are hand made it really is an extension of ones personality.

So when one of my Instagram contacts asked if I had any to share I was on the hunt once again for a cute cozy that I thought would fit her personality. I think I hit the jackpot with  the "Bow Tie Mug Hug" from issue 11 of Simply Crochet.

I pretty much followed the pattern for the most part only changing the accent trim from crab stitch to a simple single crochet stitch all the way around and I noticed that I placed my bow a little lower. The pattern worked up quickly and I absolutely love the way it turned out.

Yarn: I used "I Love This Yarn Sport Weight" in Ivory Tweed and Lipstick double stranded for both the cozy and the bow.

A Hookers Gift List: Top 5 Gifts for Crocheters

3. Gift cards - I know some people say gift cards are not thoughtful gifts but I promise no hooker is going to turn away a gift card from there favorite craft store or local yarn store. I prefer mine for Michaels as they carry the yarn I use most often :)

4. Denise in Double Q Double Ended Crochet hooks... I feel like I need these to take my hooking skills to the next level. I have done very little Tunisian crochet because I don't have the proper hooks but with this set I will not have that excuse anymore I have seen these sets on Amazon as well as stitchdiva.com.

5. Last but not least I am in love with Earth Wool Fire yarn bowls the only reason this is #5 on my list is because I believe mine would be used more for decoration than as a yarn bowl... but I definitely want one this holiday season. So Many Ideas So little time... What's On My Hook Wednesday

I don't know what it is about this time of year... but something about it really gets my creative juices flowing. As orders start to slow down for my popular winter items I have a bit more time to crochet all those things that have been on my "to crochet one day" crochet list as well as a couple, ok maybe a few, ok a whole lot of unfinished projects.

Last time I checked in I was working on the Buttercup blanket and I am still working on the Buttercup blanket in addition I wanted to do a blanket for boys as every blanket I have made has been for a girl. I found a great pattern in "go Crafty Crochet Baby Blankets" call Star Struck pattern by Kimberly Biddix, I was going to do it in various shades of blue however after getting started I though the grey was a better contrast. I am using Caron Simply Soft colors Berry Blue, Dark Country Blue, and Grey Heather and N size hook (15mm).

I have had this bag on my to do list for a few months now I have to admit that I have been putting it off because of the color changes but I really want this bag for myself so decided it was time to give it a go... the pattern is by one of my favorite pattern designers and she calls it "The Weekender".

I am doing the smaller version shown above using Red Heart Super Saver. I am not normally a Super Saver fan as it tends to be really stiff but thought the stiffness would be perfect for this project.

I only have the base done and just getting started adding my first color excited to see this one come together.

What's On The Hook Wednesday 2/6

So it has been a while since I have done a "What's on my Hook Wednesday"... and the truth is since around the end of August the same thing has been on my hooks over and over again and that would be my Signature Infinity Scarf as well as the Big Hook + Big Yarn Infinity Scarf. Now that I am finally catching up on orders I found a little time to put something new on my hooks... well not really new maybe just neglected for a little while. Do you remember this beauty from last year?

I started the Buttercup Blanket May of last year with high hopes, it was and still is one of the most challenging projects I have started and I honestly can not say why it got pushed to the side but it did and when I pulled it out last week I am inspired once again to finish it; it is taking me a little while to get use to the pattern again but I have made some progress.

Selling Patterns Online: Etsy vs. Craftsy

Do you design your own patterns? And I am not just talking about crochet... do you sew, knit, make beautiful embroidery designs? Have you been thinking this is the year that you start selling your patterns online... or maybe you already have an online shop and have been thinking of offering patterns but not sure where to get started or which selling platform will work best for you... well today I will talk about my experience selling my Signature Infinity Scarf Pattern on both Etsy and Craftsy.

I released this pattern August of 2012, and since I was already selling my finished items on Etsy via Don't Get it Twisted Crochet I didn't even question where I was going to sale... and I have to say that making the decision to offer this pattern in my Etsy shop was one of the best decisions I made for my business in 2012 and offering the pattern on Craftsy had to be my 2nd.

I was introduced to Craftsy when someone who I admire in my crochet world was offering an online class on the Craftsy platform...I loved the class and how interactive things were but I really didn't explore Craftsy beyond the online class aspect not until I started seeing Craftsy come up more and more in my searches for different crochet patterns. So after a little research I decided to list my pattern on Craftsy...and the response was about the same as on Etsy. So which do I prefer... in all honestly I enjoy selling on both platforms for different reasons so I will just do a comparison and you can decide what platform may be best for you.

Etsy vs Craftsy for Selling Patterns

When my pattern sales on Craftsy...

§  Craftsy does not charge any fees to list patterns on their site the only fees I pay are Paypal fees which by the way is the only payment method that Craftsy currently accepts.

§  Craftsy also offers automatic downloads, when you purchase a pattern you can download you receive a link that will allow you to download the pattern in PDF format. The pattern is also available in your library on Etsy.

§  Craftsy does not allow designers to sale finished items on the site only patterns/tutorials.

When my pattern sales on Etsy...

§  On Etsy in addittion to Paypal fees I also have to pay a .20 cents listing fee every time my pattern sales. (I know .20 does not sound like a lot but trust it adds up quickly).

§  Etsy does not offer automatic downloads for pattern sales so every time my pattern sales on Etsy I am responsible for sending that pattern to my customer sometimes it can be done immediately and other times my customer has to wait hours for me to email them the pattern.

§  Because I also sale finished items in my Etsy shop I occasionally get a customer who believes they have purchased a finished item instead of a pattern, but I also get more exposure to my shop... someone who may be looking for a finished infinity scarf may have found me via my pattern listing.

As I stated I do enjoy selling on both platforms however if I were not selling finished items Craftsy would be my platform of choice. From a business standpoint it is a win/win for both the seller and the buyer. Power of Word of Mouth and Twenty Scarves in Three Days

It started with this picture...I posted it on my Facebook page on September 11th. I was just sharing with my page something I had been working on. I was excited because it was a new yarn and I also was working with a larger hook. The response on the picture was "where can I buy this?" So I added it to my Etsy Shop and my newest Fall collection was born... Big Hook + Big Yarn = The Perfect Infinity Scarf funny how things just fall into place somethimes.

What happened next I am still not sure I was ready for...everyday I would get an order and a message saying "my friend said I would love this scarf can't wait to receive it." or "my friend just got her scarf can you make me one in a different color" to say I was happy and excited would be an under statement and of course I broke out in my happy dance!

Then I received a message that went something like this: One of my co workers had on your beautiful wool blend scarf at an event we attended this weekend. I love the scarf and was wondering if you offer a discount for larger orders thinking about ordering 10. I replied back stating the discount that I could offer and her response simply blew me away. "Thanks lets make it 20!"

And that is how and why I made 20 Big Hook + Big Yarn = The Perfect Infinity Scarf in three days! (I did have two weeks to make them but my schedule and other orders pushed these to a 3 day time frame).

When I started Don't Get it Twisted Crochet November of last year I did so as a way to share my love for this craft with the world and a way to continue to feed my yarn addiction. Although I have always taken my business seriously I never really thought that I would be able to stay home all day and play with yarn. I worked a full time job and I was happy with being able to crochet in my spare moments. Then came February of this year and I found myself without my full time day job and having a difficult time finding a new day job so needless to say the thought of playing with yarn all day was sounding more like a possiblility. Fast forward to today and no Don't Get it Twisted Crochet is not my sole source of income...yet, but it is headed in that direction. Since February I have had a serious talk with myself and what I want my life to look like, what things are most important to me and what things am I willing to sacrifice now so I can live the life that I want in the very near future. It required me to make some very hard decisions both personal and professional and a move from the DC metro area back to NC.

What this month has shown me is that the goals I have set for Don't Get it Twisted Crochet are achievable. That I am not crazy to follow my passion and that I need to re-evaluate and set some bigger goals for October.
